I recommend Preaching & Preachers to all preachers. Many preachers should probably read it a few years out of school and into ministry. More mature students could handle the book in school and would be all the better for it. There is a reason this book is a classic and I trust it will serve generations of preachers to come.   The final chapter of this short book is poetry. It has the form of a psalm. A full treatment of the theory and practice of preaching poetry is beyond the scope of this post, but allow me to make one point about preaching psalms. Psalms are inherently emotional.

The Expository Book Series. No matter what kind of preaching you are doing (expository, textual, or topical) big-picture thinking and study are critical. But if you’re planning to preach through a book of the Bible, you need to start by studying the book as a whole. The best way to do that is to read through the book multiple times.   Preaching by the Book is a practical handbook offering fundamental guidance for preachers beginning to explore their gifts and fresh insights for seasoned veterans desiring to refine their craft. It is a unique resource that provides a concise overview of the sacred task by considering its theological foundation, textual framework, and technical features. Price: $

The Book of the Preacher “The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in of vanities, saith the preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity” – (Eccl,2). “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to. Dr Lawson has also written a two-volume commentary on the Psalms and in this latest book he shows preachers how to develop Christ-centered expository messages from the great hymn book of the people of God. Pastors, elders, lay preachers — all who love preaching and love the Psalms will find this book invaluable.

As the author himself says on the opening page of the book, true preaching is the highest and greatest calling and it is the most urgent need in the church today.

In a world where God, the Bible and preaching are relentlessly trivialized, Preaching and Preachers is both desperately needed and intimately by:   Second, this book stands as a defender of preaching in an age when the very practice was losing prominence, as the Bible came under great scrutiny from the liberal movement.

Lloyd-Jones’s position regarding expository preaching is a great reminder how preachers in every generation must fight to remain faithful to God’s Word. Preaching and Preachers answers all these questions (and much, much more) with careful consideration. The book also calls your attention to what is at stake, and what is at stake is far more than delivering a message on a Sunday morning—it is the life of the church and the salvation of souls/5().

This is one reason preachers lose so much creditability in the eyes of the world. James deals with what we are to do until the Lord’s coming. Look up Be Calm (James ) Predictions of Christ’s return are nothing new.

The particular focus of “Preaching and Preachers” is well preaching and preachers. I have nothing against blogs that cover a variety of topics, but the purpose of “Preaching and Preachers” is intentionally narrow.

Every post and discussion will, by design, be homiletically-related in some form or fashion. My blog exists. As preachers know, people are served best by a balance of explanation and illustration. This book has illustrations in spades. In fact, the heart of the book’s middle section is a series of biographical sketches from Reformation and post-Reformation preachers who embody the “heart” of experiential preaching.

Preaching and Preachers is a classic. That may sound prosaic in a world of hype and spin, but with this book it is actually true.
